Jim Johnson, Vice President of Operations with Able Services and 40 year member of the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE), presented to the annual IUOE convention in the Nation’s Capital. Watch the speech HERE.
Jim informed IUOE’s 39th General Convention about the retiring Baby Boomers and the imminent need to recruit, train, and retain qualified talent in a job market where the trade is nearly 100% employed. “High school and junior college students need to be encouraged to seek out the trades as a genuine long-term employment option,” Jim said to the audience. “Not every student has to go to college to earn a degree because their high school counselor tells them that’s their measurement of success.” Other guest speakers included the U.S. Secretary of Labor, the Mayor of Los Angeles – Eric Garcetti, and several other elected officials.
Jim currently serves as a member of IUOE’s Local 39 apprenticeship committee and is a trustee for the local’s health and welfare pension and annuity trust funds. Mr. Johnson applies his knowledge as a building operator to maximize the effectiveness of safety and preventive maintenance programs at Able Services.
“Training for our industries is not a six-month education,” said Jim. “It takes years to master our trades and then there is a lifetime of continued education. At the end of the day both the employers and the union have similar goals. We want to hire, train and maintain quality people and provide a future for themselves and their families. I cannot speak for other employers, but on behalf of Able Services, I can tell you the IUOE does have one employer that believes in what you have accomplished, fully supports what you are doing today and looks forward to partnering with you for a bright future.”
The IUOE was founded in Chicago in 1896, the trade union represents 377K workers: from heavy equipment operators and mechanics in the construction industry, to the stationary engineers who maintain and operate building, industrial complexes, and service industries throughout the USA and Canada.
